A warm drink can make a cold night feel a little less harsh. For guests staying overnight at Wilmington Warming Shelter during the cold weather months, a simple tumbler with a lid can offer comfort, dignity, and practical help.

This season, we are supporting Wilmington Warming Shelter by collecting gently used tumbler cups with lids for their overnight guests.

Collection begins Sunday, November 1, in the Parish Hall.

Why Wilmington Warming Shelter matters during cold weather

Wilmington Warming Shelter serves people experiencing homelessness when cold weather makes sleeping outside especially dangerous. As an overnight cold weather shelter, it provides a safe indoor space where guests can come in from the elements, rest, and receive basic care.

Cold weather shelter is not only about a bed for the night. It is about protection from freezing temperatures, a place to be seen, and a chance to meet immediate needs with compassion.

The shelter’s mission also reaches beyond overnight stays. Wilmington Warming Shelter offers a mobile shower unit and a drop-in day center, helping guests with needs that many people take for granted.

Why tumblers with lids are needed

A tumbler might sound like a small item. In a warming shelter, it can be used again and again.

For overnight guests, a tumbler with a secure lid can help hold water, coffee, tea, cocoa, or soup. It can keep a drink warmer for longer. It can also reduce spills in a shared shelter space, especially when people are settling in for the night with blankets, coats, bags, and personal belongings close by.

Reusable tumblers are also sturdy. They are easier to carry than disposable cups and can serve guests throughout a cold weather season.

For this drive, we are asking for:

  • Gently used tumblers

  • Matching lids

  • Clean items in good condition

  • Cups that are not cracked, broken, or heavily stained

  • Lids that close properly

Tumblers do not need to be new. A clean, gently used cup sitting unused in a cabinet can become a useful gift for someone seeking warmth and shelter.

Please check that each tumbler has its lid before donating. The lid is part of what makes the cup practical for shelter use.

A simple act of community care

This collection is a practical form of community outreach. It connects a real local need with something many households already have.

Most kitchens have an extra travel cup, insulated tumbler, or reusable drink container tucked away. Some came from events. Some were gifts. Some were bought with good intentions and rarely used.

This drive gives those items a new purpose.

No single person has to meet the whole goal. One tumbler helps. Three tumblers help. A bag of clean cups from a family, small group, or ministry team helps even more.

How to donate beginning Sunday, November 1

We will begin collecting tumblers in the Parish Hall on Sunday, November 1. Donations may be dropped off there as the drive gets underway.

What this drive says about how we care for one another

The needs connected to homelessness can feel large. Housing, employment, health, transportation, and safety are all real concerns. A tumbler drive does not solve every problem.

Still, small acts matter when they answer a real need.

A clean cup with a lid can be part of a safe evening at the shelter. It can hold something warm. It can be carried from one place to another. It can remind a guest that someone thought ahead and cared enough to give something useful.

That is the heart of this collection.

Wilmington Warming Shelter meets people during a hard season, often on the coldest nights of the year. By helping them reach their goal to collect 200 tumblers with lids, we can support that work in a direct and practical way.

If you have gently used tumblers at home, please set them aside, wash them, match them with their lids, and bring them to the Parish Hall beginning Sunday, November 1.

One cup may seem small. Together, 200 cups can help welcome 200 moments of warmth.
